How to use an Instagram API without a Meta app

Meta's official Instagram APIs are built for managing accounts you own. If you need to read public data about accounts you do not own, you need a different path. This guide covers both, honestly.

Path 1: Official Instagram Graph API.

What you need: a Meta developer app, a Facebook Page linked to an Instagram professional account, the right permissions, and often app review.

What it's good for

  • PublishingPosts and reels to your own account.
  • Your accountYour own insights, comments, and DMs through the messaging API.
  • Business DiscoveryBasic public fields of other business and creator accounts.

What it can't do well

  • Personal accountsReading accounts that are not professional.
  • TranscriptsReel transcripts are not part of it.
  • Other people's feedsFull comment threads or hashtag feeds of accounts you do not manage, beyond its limits.
  • TimeIt does not start in five minutes. App review can take days to weeks.

Use it when you are acting on your own account. It is the right tool for that.

Path 2: A public-data API.

What you need: an API key. That is it. No Instagram login, no Meta app, no review. Instadata is independent and is not affiliated with Meta.

What you get

28 endpoints across profiles, posts, reels, transcripts, comments, hashtags, places, ads and collaborations. Public content only. The endpoint list is the full sheet.

What it can't do

  • WriteIt cannot post, comment, like or DM. It is read-only.
  • PrivatePrivate accounts return 404 and are not charged.
  • Your insightsIt cannot read private insights from an account you own.

Responsible use.

Read public data. Respect people's privacy and applicable law in your jurisdiction. Terms. Do not use it to harass, spam, or profile individuals.

Questions.

Is it legal to use public Instagram data?

It depends on use and jurisdiction. Public-data access is common, but you are responsible for compliant use. This is not legal advice.

Will my Instagram account get banned?

No account is involved. Instadata does not use your login.

What replaced the Basic Display API?

Meta retired it in Dec 2024. The Graph API with Instagram Login covers own-account use. For public data on accounts you do not manage, use a public-data API.

How much does it cost?

$5 per 1,000 credits. 25 free credits on signup, no card. Most reads are 1 credit.
